August is a time for lazy hazy days, vacations and baseball pennant races to begin heating up. For me the landscape heats up in August, one of my favorite months of the year. The landscape explodes in colors and textures in August and September in a show that is anything but “bush league”. From Rudbeckia to Altheas, Ornamental Grasses to Hydrangeas, peaking Flowering Annuals to Hibiscus, August is a month to enjoy and savor the bounty of color available to us. Of course we’re not the only ones loving it, sit quietly and observe the butterflies and hummingbirds playing in a garden that is in full flower during August.
The other day I was watering roses in my landscape and felt the “whirling” of the wings of a hummingbird only a few feet away. I vote for August as one of the best gardening months of the year…….a hit, a home run, and far from “bush league”.
